Steven Weber Returns to Television

Steven WeberWhat’s your TV screen been lacking these days? If you’re like me, you may have been thinking . Then again, he’s probably not the first name to come to mind, but he’s welcome on my TV any day. Weber, if you recall, last starred on Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, which while overrated, was no fault of his. Think back a bit further and you may recall him from the series Wings, one of those classic little sitcoms with the great ensemble cast. Incidentally, how amazing does Weber’s Wings co-star look on ? Put him in the “never ages” hall of fame with ! Huh…? Oh, sorry, just daydreaming a bit there. Back to Weber, who will next be seen on NBC’s comedy Zip—this show has been bumping along without a green light since last spring, but once Weber was signed on as single dad/con man Trip Stringer, the show got the go-ahead. He’s replacing Rob Huebel, who starred in the original pilot. And speaking of Rob Lowe territory, Weber will make a guest appearance on this season.

The 59th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards Coverage

Emmy AwardsThe 59th Annual Emmy Awards has not even started, yet I’m already sensing sensing a weird vibe about tonight’s telecast.  Will the show be a celebration of those young and new (e.g. Heroes)?  Will it be a tribute to those bowing out (James Gandolfini and crew)?  Or will performer Kanye West somehow manage to cast a controversial shadow over the rest of the ceremony?

What a difference a year makes.  Twelve months ago, we were still handing out trophies to stars from Will & Grace and The West Wing (those shows feel so five-years ago now).  Today, we welcome a new crop of nominees including Ugly Betty and 30 Rock for Best Comedy.  Last year, we were entertained by an always-hilarious Conan O’Brien.  This year, we are threatened by a song and dance number from this year’s host, Ryan Seacrest.  Last August, 24 snagged the award for Best Drama.  This September, it’s not even nominated (yet somehow Boston Legal is).

I think it would be safe to assume the voters would predictably (and respectfully) shower The Sopranos with honors, but I’ll still be crossing my fingers for an upset sometime tonight.  We’ll need something to talk about tomorrow…

Amanda Peet Gives Birth

Amanda PeetWith Amanda Peet’s character, Jordan McDeere, pregnant on Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, I almost forgot that Peet was due so soon in real life. Peet and her husband, screenwriter David Benioff, welcomed 6 pound, 10 ounce daughter Frances Pen on Tuesday. This is the couple’s first child. The Studio 60 star’s rep commented to E! News that “Amanda and her daughter are resting comfortably.” Peet and Benioff were married last fall. The question now is, when will Studio 60 return to television? With The Black Donnellys taking over the spot, it’s still unclear when Studio 60 will come back, if it does at all. This may leave many fans wondering what happens to McDeere’s little bun in the oven. There are six episodes remaining for the season, and I for one would like to know how things all turn out.

The Black Donnellys Gets Bumped Up a Week

The Black DonnellysFans of Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip are about to see the show bumped off the schedule one week earlier than originally planned. NBC was to premiere the new drama The Black Donnellys in early March, but instead moved the broadcast up a week. The midseason replacement will take over Studio 60‘s Monday night slot at 10:00 p.m. Donnellys is expected to be a hit, partly because its from the team who created the film Crash and partly because its lead-in will be Heroes. Look for The Black Donnellys on Monday, February 26th. NBC has not yet announced when Studio 60 will reappear on the schedule, making fans nervous that it may never return.  Studio 60 has not proven to be much of a ratings winner, with only 7 million viewers; 8.58 million if you factor in delayed viewing. Heroes will take a break following the March 5 cliffhanger, and returns in April and May to finish out the season.

Premiere Date Set for ‘Donnellys’ and ‘Andy Barker’

Andy Richter These are two of the shows you may have heard some buzz about in the fall, then they swiftly fell off of the radar. The Black Donnellys, a crime drama, will premiere on NBC on March 5 at 10:00 p.m. This mid-season entry will knock Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip off of the schedule, with no clear indication about when it will return. Donnellys will have the lead-in of Heroes, so it’s not too shabby a place to be.

Andy Barker, P.I., the new comedy starring Andy Richter, will begin on March 15th at 9:30 p.m. (also on NBC). So, that will replace 30 Rock mid-season. As much as I’m looking forward to seeing Andy Richter, I will certainly be mourning the absence of 30 Rock. That show just continues to get better each week. Fear not, however, 30 Rock will return to its Thursday time beginning on April 19th.

Studio 60 Gets the Full Order

Studio 60Seems NBC is taking pity on the ratings-impaired series Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. While the show hasn’t been living up to expectations in terms of viewership, the network has extended the show for the full season. Time will tell if the show gains momentum—and numbers. It’s hard to believe that it could see an increase in ratings, since most people who jumped ship on the series are unlikely to dive back in if they’ve missed a number of episodes. NBC Entertainment chief Kevin Reilly said of the full season order, “I am pleased to show our support for this outstanding and ambitious effort from executive producers Aaron Sorkin and Thomas Schlamme. From the start, they have delivered the superb show that we wanted. The critical support has been rock-solid and there is a passionate core audience. We can’t wait for what’s going to come in the remainder of the season.” The show had seemed to be in jeopardy of cancellation, but somehow dodged the bullet. While the show started strong with 13 million viewers, it has dropped to about 8 million per episode. The show does, however, draw the highest concentration of folks with incomes of $75,000 or more.

Additional Scripts Ordered for Four New Series

Studio 60Four new series on ABC and NBC have gotten the go-ahead for additional scripts. Help Me Help You, The Nine, Men in Trees and Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip are all big winners—ABC’s shows have gotten the order for four more scripts and Studio 60 is picked up for three more scripts. Studio 60‘s announcement was a surprise to many, as the show has not been a ratings winner. It does, however, rank among the top shows for upscale viewers (incomes greater than $75,000).

This marks a trend of networks to favor ordering more scripts rather than giving full season pickups. In fact, only six new shows have been given the full ride so far—Brothers & Sisters, Ugly Betty, Heroes, Shark, Jericho, and The Game.

Friday Night Lights to Replace Studio 60 on October 30th

Friday Night LightsRuh-roh. This decision sounds like a bad sign for Studio 60—for one night only, Friday Night Lights will replace the Aaron Sorkin lovefest. NBC is trying to switch things up, and may just be trying to decide which one of these ratings stinkers will get the boot. On October 30th, during the 10 p.m. slot that Studio 60 normally fills, the football drama will get a shot at seeing whether it sinks or swims. Friday Night Lights will air following Heroes, NBC’s most successful freshman show. The new episode of Lights will air on October 30th, with a repeat of the episode in its usual 8 p.m. Tuesday time slot on October 31st. Studio 60 will take the week off—and for you Studio 60 fans, let’s hope it’s not more than a week. The much-hyped behind-the-scenes look at sketch comedy has steadily dropped viewers, now dipping below 9 million. People have a lot of complaints about the series, and I’m beginning to wonder if it will make it at all.

Friday Night Lights also seemed to be in danger of cancellation, but NBC ordered more scripts and now has the night switcheroo plan in place. The series has only averaged 6.6 million viewers.

AOL Brings New Series a Week Early

Bradley Whitford This afternoon, AOL offered Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip for viewing one week ahead of its television broadcast. Similarly, the comedy Twenty Good Years will go live on AOL on Wednesday, October 4th. AOL joined forces with Warner Bros. Television and NBC to offer an online sneak peak at each of these series. Studio 60 will continue to be available throughout the week, commercial-free. Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip debuts on NBC on September 18th, while Twenty Good Years can be seen on October 11th.

“We’re pleased to be offering consumers the chance to view two of our most highly-anticipated shows ahead of their broadcast premiere,” said John Miller, Chief Marketing Officer, NBC Universal Television Group. “This partnership with AOL allows us to continue our aggressive online preview campaign and ensures an enormous number of users will have an opportunity to sample our product.”
