2009 Golden Globe Nominations (TV)

True Blood

Although the Hollywood Foreign Press Association was forced to cancel last year’s party, the Golden Globes will finally make its return next month. The 66th annual event is scheduled to air Sunday, January 11th, just over a week before the Academy Award nominations are announced.

Here are some of the noteworthy mentions from this year’s list of TV nominees:

  • HBO, with its 22 nominations, once again led the pack.
  • In Treatment and Recount, both from HBO, had five nominations each - the highest number for any program this year.
  • House is the only non-cable program to be up for Best Drama.
  • True Blood is the only new series to receive any nods.
  • Kiefer Sutherland and 24 received nominations for the show’s 2-hour special.

(You can find the full list of television nominees after the jump. Click here for the film nominations.)

This Week on TV (10/27-11/2)

Brotherhood

(You can view TV Envy’s Fall Television Programming Schedule here.)

MONDAY (10/27)

  • Heroes (NBC, 9pm):  “Angela asks Sylar to save Peter.” As if anyone believes that Peter - or anyone else - would really die at this point.
  • Jon & Kate Plus 8 (TLC, 9pm):  “The Gosselins get ready for a trip to Hawaii, where Jon and Kate will renew their wedding vows.” This time around, they’ll be paying to feed 8 more guests.
  • One Tree Hill (CW, 9pm):  “Lucas’ second novel proves successful.” Let’s see if we can say the same for ‘s second wedding.
  • My Own Worst Enemy (NBC, 10pm):  “Edward’s trip to Mexico to gain intel on Russian weaponry doesn’t go as planned.” Nothing about this show is going as planned.

This Week on TV (10/6-10/12)

The Real Housewives of Atlanta

(You can view TV Envy’s Fall Television Programming Schedule here.)

MONDAY (10/6)

  • Two and a Half Men (CBS, 9pm):  “Alan tries dating two women at the same time.” I remember when Ducky was pining over just Molly Ringwald. He’s all growns up now.
  • Prison Break (FOX, 9pm):  “Sara learns something disturbing about Michael.” She realizes that if it weren’t for his steely gaze and tattoos, Michael would just be your average white guy.
  • I Want to Work for Diddy (VH1, 9pm):  Series finale. “The final contestants train with Marcus Buckingham and are interviewed by Diddy.” If they mistakenly admit their loyalty for McCain, Diddy will retreat back under the covers.
  • Exiled (MTV, 10:30pm):  “A hip hop star’s daughter is sent to the island nation Vanuatu to live in a bug-filled jungle in the shadow of an active volcano.” Had she wasted her youth watching Survivor: Vanuatu, she would have been prepared.

Casting Corner: Ugly Betty, Saturday Night Live, In Plain Sight

Eddie CibrianBobby MoynihanCristian de la Fuente

Here’s a quick look at some of the casting announcements made recently:

According to Entertainment Weekly, the whistle may soon be blown on a Ugly Betty hunk.

Back in May, I declared Eddie Cibrian to be ABC’s Hottest Co-Star of the Year. Unfortunately, the hot gym teacher will apparently be taking his chest dimples over to another network. Cibrian, who was only scheduled to appear in four Betty episodes this season, has now lined up a short arc on USA’s .

So what will Coach Tony Diaz’s eventual departure mean for Hilda? Well, if she’s half as devastated as I am—it’ll probably mean lots of nights spent with Ben & Jerry.

The 59th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards Coverage

Emmy AwardsThe 59th Annual Emmy Awards has not even started, yet I’m already sensing sensing a weird vibe about tonight’s telecast.  Will the show be a celebration of those young and new (e.g. Heroes)?  Will it be a tribute to those bowing out (James Gandolfini and crew)?  Or will performer Kanye West somehow manage to cast a controversial shadow over the rest of the ceremony?

What a difference a year makes.  Twelve months ago, we were still handing out trophies to stars from Will & Grace and The West Wing (those shows feel so five-years ago now).  Today, we welcome a new crop of nominees including Ugly Betty and 30 Rock for Best ComedyLast year, we were entertained by an always-hilarious Conan O’Brien.  This year, we are threatened by a song and dance number from this year’s host, Ryan Seacrest.  Last August, 24 snagged the award for Best Drama.  This September, it’s not even nominated (yet somehow Boston Legal is).

I think it would be safe to assume the voters would predictably (and respectfully) shower The Sopranos with honors, but I’ll still be crossing my fingers for an upset sometime tonight.  We’ll need something to talk about tomorrow…

Here’s the play-by-play of tonight’s events coming to you from the neglected West Coast!
