Making Reality, TV Guide Style

It was absolutely by accident that I began watching episodes of Making News: Savannah Style on TV Guide, but I was instantly drawn in by the dynamic personalities and behind-the-scenes action. I actually don’t watch any news program…but I’m not above watching a reality show about one.
Savannah’s WJCL news team has the lowest ratings in their market. The station has been plagued by staffing troubles (the general manager of the station was arrested for embezzlement, among other troubles) and the owners are trying to sell, leaving little money for upgrades and equipment. To that end, the cameras and sound work only some of the time, leaving the news team scrambling to meet deadlines and create TV-worthy coverage.

FX Announces Shield End Date

When this year began, followers of The Shield were still uncertain when their FX series would return. Thankfully, they at least now know when it will end.
Although Season 6 debuted last April, the show’s seventh - and final - season was pushed back to Fall 2008. Surprisingly, the scheduling decision had nothing to do with the writers’ strike. The network simply didn’t want the program to compete with with the Summer Olympics. (As if they couldn’t have aired repeats for a whole two weeks.)
The Emmy-nominated series, which still has 13 more episodes in the vault, has now been given a November 25th end date. While that may seem like a short stint, the 3-month run is actually in line with the previous seasons. And from what I hear, these final hours will be something to remember.

WARNING: Spoilers ahead!
Believe me, devotees of Lost are not the only ones talking about the things that happened last night. The show’s cast also had a stake in the events that transpired. And unfortunately, most of them had no clue how things were going to turn out until right before the end.
After the jump, read what one person had to say about Season 4’s closer.

Why American Idol Let David Hernandez Stay

Yesterday, we told you about the latest controversy surrounding American Idol’s David Hernandez. (To summarize quickly: he was a male stripper/dancer who performed fully nude for mostly male clients.)
Given Idol‘s decision to boot frontrunner Frenchie Davis off the show back in 2003 (after news of her racy lingeries photos leaked out), it was reasonable for people to worry about Hernandez’s fate. But in an interview with TV Guide, executive producer Ken Warwick made it (surprisingly) clear that the issue was a non-issue.
Here are some choice quotes from that Q&A:
When asked if David Hernandez’s fate would be affected by the revelation:
“No, it won’t make any difference. The truth is, we’re never judgmental about what people do to earn a living. They’ve got to put food in people’s mouths.”
When asked if he knew about David’s past:
“No, I wasn’t. But the truth of the matter is, it wouldn’t have made any difference. ”

The Idols: Now and Then

News
American Idol is the only show on television which turns us all into music industry insiders. “He’s got some pitch problems,” you might say to a companion, or “Now, that was a poor song selection.” While Idol contestants audition before the judges, it’s really the viewing audience that’s offering the harshest criticisms. We’re carefully breaking down wardrobes, hairstyles, personality and sometimes singing too. But now that the Best of the Rest episode has aired, the hopefuls are on to Hollywood to display their talents for a much-hoped-for spot in the Final 24.
It’s a new season and today it’s all about the new faces and voices getting ready to grace the live Idol stage. But let’s not forget all those shining stars we rooted for in the past. Wondering what happened to that contestant from season three you adored and never saw again? Want to know how to find the singers who didn’t nab the most votes, but managed to nab your affections? Former Idol contestant (and media darling) Sanjaya Malakar will be hosting Idol Stars: Where Are They Now? on the TV Guide network. It airs Feb. 24 at 8 pm EST, but don’t worry, TV Guide has a bad habit of repeating all their programming until you’re quite sick of it. You’ll have tons of chances to watch.

Golden Globes Covered on Multiple Channels

Announcements
A pissing match between NBC and Dick Clark Productions will allow tomorrow’s announcement of the Golden Globe winners to air simultaneously on multiple channels. The one-hour awards presser - which was once an NBC exclusive - can now be seen elsewhere, just like the recently overhyped Patriots game. (That’s what the Peacock network gets for refusing to pay the requested licensing fees.)
TV Guide and E! are the only two channels to (so far) announce full coverage of the free-for-all event. No matter what your station preference is, be sure to be tuned in by 9:00 ET.

USA Network Cancels ‘The Dead Zone’, ‘4400’

Cancellations
TV Guide is exclusive reporting today that the plugs have been pulled on both The Dead Zone and The 4400. Dead, which had been on the the USA Network for six seasons, had its last airing on September 16. This was also the same date of 4400’s Season Four finale.
Although a reason was not stated, creator Scott Peters acknowledged the cancellation of The 4400 on the show’s message board. Meanwhile, fans of The Dead Zone have been working on their own online petition.
While I admittedly had not watched either series, I was actually bummed to hear the news. How could I not support any program that had Farmer Ted (a.k.a. Anthony Michael Hall) as its lead? And I only just learned today that The 4400 was (supposedly) set in Seattle. Just that fact alone should give the program a permanent time slot on USA’s schedule.
Keep Farmer Ted! Keep 4400! Go Seahawks!

Will Lindsay Lohan Appear on ‘Ugly Betty’?

Rumors
Although she’s only been in America for a few months, Victoria Beckham has already managed to start a new celebrity trend: Ugly Betty appearances. After the Spice Girl’s stint on tonight’s show, fans can expect to see a cameo from Snoop Dogg this Dec. 13th. Now it’s being rumored Miss Lindsay Lohan may be soon guesting on three episodes as well.
While I really wouldn’t want a Lohan appearance to overshadow a great show, I would be willing to overlook my feelings for her in this once instance. Assuming the TV Guide buzz is true, Lindsay may be cast as a former high school classmate of Betty’s. She would also be the manager of a fast-food restaurant.
Now if that doesn’t scream Lindsay.....well, then it screams K-Fed. Either way, I’d be watching.
