CW Says Goodbye to Girlfriends
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Comedy, Prime Time, The CW, UPN, Cancellations
While ABC and NBC have been heavily promoting their new female-filled programs, CW is saying “Been there, done that.”
After 8 years on the UPN/CW networks, Girlfriends is getting the boot.
Although the show was not expected to be renewed this fall, the series was also not granted any post-strike episodes. In other words, what you’ve seen is what you’re gonna get. The network simply chose (understandably) to focus its financial resources on those programs making a comeback.
While nothing definitive has been planned, Girlfriends’ executive producer hopes to create some type of proper goodbye for the long-running comedy. You’d think that after 172 episodes, that would be the least The CW could do.

Reality News: ‘WWE’, ‘Big Brother’, ‘Dancing with the Stars’, ‘Survivor’

After ten years with the CW/UPN organizations, the wrestlers of the WWE are now in search of a new home. Friday Night Smackdown - a decent ratings earner for the network - wasn’t apparently considered worthy of its renewal price. Displeased with recent negotiations, World Wrestling Entertainment has started shopping its product around town.
Although the loss of the show will now create a two-hour void in CW‘s weekend lineup, the network will now have a place to shelve their experiments gone wrong (e.g. Crowned: The Mother of All Pageants). Or maybe they can use the spot to air marathons of America’s Next Top Model or Beauty and the Geek?
Whatever they ultimately do, they have until Sept. 12th to figure it out.

7th Heaven Series Finale Set
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Drama, Prime Time, The CW, UPN, WB, The CW, Cancellations, Ratings
Am I experiencing deja vu? It seemed like last year was going to be the series finale of 7th Heaven, then they returned for yet another season after the merger of WB and UPN (to become CW). Yes, that did happen, but this year they are really wrapping things up. Really. And you know, they can’t really complain too much—7th Heaven has been the longest running family drama on television, with its first show airing in 1996. May 13th marks the series finale, which will no doubt bring in a fair share of viewers. Last May’s season finale brought in the highest ratings in over two years. While this show never hooked me, there are plenty of fans out there who will be sad to see it go. Besides, it did put Jessica Biel and Barry Watson on the map, so all is not lost.

Runaway Suffers Latest Cancellation
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Drama, Prime Time, UPN, WB, Cancellations, Ratings
The axe just keeps falling—the latest casualty is the CW’s drama Runaway. With only four episodes aired, this new series barely got off the ground to provide itself. This is the one about a family on the run, when dad (Donnie Wahlberg) is accused of murder. Of course, it’s all just a misunderstanding, as he is really innocent. The series aired Mondays at 9:00 p.m., then CW moved Runaway to Sunday, but the move didn’t make any impact on ratings. CW will fill the slot with repeats until another replacement is announced. As you recall, CW came about when UPN and WB combined. Runaway was only one of two series from the newborn network. The other was the comedy The Game.
