Wednesday Ratings: Criminal Minds Has a Strong Showing

Last night, Criminal Minds delivered impressive numbers despite being in repeats. Unfortunately, the drama couldn’t help CBS take down FOX. The first half of the SYTYCD finale gave its network wins in the demos and the viewers.

Only Four Left Standing on American Idol

Top 5 Idols

As the number one show in the U.S., has had its share of mis-steps and bad press. The scandal, the controversy, the mistakes are all part of the Idol package. And let it be said that no PR force is more powerful or more graceful at covering - and apologizing for - flaws.

Host made short work of addressing the latest issues on the show. After saying they were “still out of breath” from Tuesday, he announced that the performers collected 35 million votes. He talked about Neil Diamond, introduced the contestants and judges and then pointed to two Idol alum sitting in the crowd (Gina Glocksen and Constantine Maroulis). But before any talk of elimination could be presented, there was still a lingering issue to be faced: one judge’s live TV mistake.

American Idol: One Step Closer to a Winner

Top 6 with Andrew Lloyd Webber

Tuesday’s performances inspired 38 million votes from fans, but great singing was obviously not one of the reasons the voters took to their phones.

The results show opened this week with the Top 6 Idols crooning “All I Ask of You,” as Lord accompanied them on piano. It’s a good song, and the performance was nice (even if there were times when Irish diva Carly Smithson overpowered the other two ladies in the competition). It was all smiling faces an fun as the Idols danced around on stage, but soon enough they were shuffled to the back to await the news we all wanted to hear.

How Charitable: American Idol

Ryan Seacrest With three nights of quickly approaching, the show is prepared to dominate the week’s ratings once more. But don’t worry - it’s all in the name of charity. And it seems that everyone involved with the show is getting into the spirit of things.

Host , who reportedly earns $14 million a year (Forbes), has decided to forgo his usual paycheck for Sunday night’s Idol Gives Back special (which airs Wednesday). See Seacrest work for free tomorrow night, when Idol will take over no less than two and one half hours of programming. Yowzah.

American Idol: Another One Bites the Dust

American Idol Top 9

The contestants were all smiles as they performed the Dolly Parton hit “9 to 5,” but tensions seethed just below the surface as this group was quickly shuffled backstage to await their respective fates. The routine was peppy and poppy, with the singers gathering around the judges’ island to finish the number. Joy was short-lived, however, as attentions quickly turned to talk of elimination.

Idol very cleverly turns information which might take less than a minute to deliver (“hey, by the way, you just got kicked off the show”) into an hour-long spectacle replete with stage performances, video clips, and of course the endless cross-promotions. Elimination action is always very cleverly placed, little tidbits leading up to what is supposed to be a dramatic end. Were you shocked?

American Idol: The Band and The Singers Collide

The Clark BrothersFor myself and the thirteen other people who watched The Next Great American Band, FOX has come up with a very special cross-promotion. Or a very self-serving one.

The Clark Brothers, that charming boy band who managed to win the reality competition The Next Great American Band, will soon be appearing on the stage. This was a summer show meant to fill the Idol void created every single May, a ratings hole FOX has long been desperate to fill. Using a very familiar set up and some familiar faces, Band could have been another great big hit. But someone at FOX scheduled the show to air on Fridays and the whole bloody thing was a terrible flop - but honestly, the music on the show was really quite good. I was blown away by bands like Light of Doom and Dot Dot Dot, and somewhat less impressed with the country/bluegrass Clark Brothers. But to each their own.

Anyway, this trio will appear on stage to deliver more country right into the American Idol jugular. I’ll say it again: a rocker has never won Idol. A country girl has.

American Idol: First of the Top 12 Sent Packing

Top 12 Idol

Elimination night on began with more cross-promotion. This time, it was Jim Carrey (star of an upcoming 20th Century FOX movie) in a weird elephant suit. During his banter with host Ryan Seacrest, the movie star cried out, “I love the show, I love the contestants.” Me, too…up to a point.

This promotional effort (which is probably totally unnecessary - the movie will bank big bucks whether Carrey parades around in a silly suit or not) was quickly followed by an announcement. “We’re changing the theme!” announced, claiming that an avalanche of telephone calls and e-mails led the show to feature tunes from the Beatles next week as well. I’d like to venture a guess that the tenor of those comments was mostly in the I-didn’t-hear-what-I-wanted-to-hear vein and that next week, we’ll hear much more of the White Album. Just a guess, though.

Next came a quick early Beatles medley of songs, a mishmash of “All My Lovin’,” “I Feel Fine,” “Can’t Buy Me Love,” and “Help!” as performed by the . But as soon as the music faded, it was time to get to the real business of the evening: getting rid of one of them.

American Idol: Top 8 Girls Give it a Go-Go

Top 8 Girls

’s Wednesday ladies night started out with the usual nonsensical judge-host banter. Ryan Seacrest asked if Randy Jackson is “too nice” this season, then turned his attention to Paula Abdul. “The 80s was a big year for you,” he said. Guess again, Seacrest. The 80s actually encompassed an entire decade - and if you ask me, it was Madonna (not Abdul) who will for ever be the queen of those ten years. Yet, no one sang Madonna. I’m disappointed, ladies.

American Idol Review: Top 10 Girls

So it seems that, largely, 70s week was a bust for the contestants. The theme of both the Tuesday and Wednesday performances seemed to be “pick a better song next time.” But for four of them, there will be no next time.

Carly SmithsonCarly Smithson ended last week’s performances, slating her in the first place position Wednesday night. I loved her black outfit and the power she put into “Crazy On You,” but there were times when everything didn’t quite sound in key. called her performance “good toward the end,” but said that she “over-hit” some of the notes. Paula told Carly, “you are an amazing singer” which started off the tone of her mostly generic comments for the rest of the evening. Simon liked Carly’s performance better than last Wednesday’s, but thinks she hasn’t quite found the right song. He did give her one piece of praise, saying none of the other girls in the competition “can touch you vocally.”

Shining ‘Moment’ for FOX

Moment of TruthWednesday night saw the arrival of the show I’ve been anticipating most: on . Wisely, the network premiered this new game show right after number one . Scoring 23.2 million viewers, it’s safe to say the show was a success. (It’s the biggest ratings for any premiere this season.) Meanwhile, Idol won 26.8 million viewers, far outpacing ’s and Mandel’s million-dollar mission. For weeks, Moment has been getting quality promos and a lot of ad time, so it’s no surprise the followed. But…how good is the show, really?
