Kathy Griffin on Her Divorce: Why Do We Care?
So Kathy Griffin told Larry King last night that the real reason she’s divorcing her husband is that he stole $72,000 from her.
Yawn. I actually don’t really want to blog about Kathy Griffin’s love life. I want to blog about why people blog about Kathy Griffin’s love life. Because I genuinely have no idea, though I don’t mean to knock anyone who does blog about her. I get that people care; I just have no clue why they do.
Thanks to My Life on the D-List, Griffin has recently escalated her career from just kind of being around and being annoying. Nowadays, she shows up everywhere. Her show. E!‘s red carpet coverage. As guest judge on Last Comic Standing. I think she’s funny, but not in any kind of earth-shattering way, so I have to wonder: do people really care about why her husband left her? (I didn’t even know about it until today, and I read my entertainment news.) If so, why? Is it because of her show, which I admit I have not seen? Is her show even worth watching?
Basically, I would like someone to explain the appeal of this person as a gossip-worthy celebrity (not her appeal as a comic) to me, and I would like to know if it’s a genuine appeal, or something she and her PR people have manufactured. It just seems to me that, all of a sudden, she’s famous for…not much of anything.

If I hadn’t ever watched her show My life on the D List I’d be right there with you wondering….I used to think of her as the most annoying of t.v. actress/comediens whose only recent claim to fame was for multiple plastic surgeries. I really really couldn’t stand her. Then I watched it and got completely sucked in and found her to be truly hysterically funny. She’s a little comic genius. Her relationship with her husband was a thte core of the show and seemed to be a lovely pairing. Apparently there is always more there under the layers of a marriage. You gotta watch the show and reevaluate.

I’m confused by your post. You can’t understand why anyone would be interested in this news yet you write a blog about television? Then why does anyone care about any of this?
People like news about famous people, period.

Kenneth,
I don’t dispute that people like news about famous people. I guess I am just wondering when Kathy Griffin got famous enough for us to care about her personal life so much—she and her husband are not exactly Brangelina. It kind of snuck up on me, and I’m wondering if that’s because I have never seen her show. According to what vjay says, that is apparently the reason. I need to try to make time to check it out and satisfy my curiosity.

I think she is obnoxious and not funny at all. I’d kill myself if I had to sit through an hour of her stand-up…

If you think this is confusing, go over to Kathy Griffin.net and try to sort through the neuroses and chest-puffery of her “hardcore” fans in the chat board area. It’s not funny-haha, it’s funny-scary. One person recently wrote that they love Kathy Griffin’s comedy more then life itself. All newcomers are treated as spies and trolls, no matter what they say, if it isn’t 100% complimentary to her.

So Boo Hoo, I *shouldn’t* try watching her show since it’s apparently somehow brainwashing people over the airwaives? Thanks for the heads-up.
I think she has some funny moments, but overall I find her more annoying than funny. I certainly can’t see why anyone would devote their life to being her fan.

First, if you haven’t seen her show, you truly might be wise to re-evaluate, as another “poster” mentioned. Her show (on Bravo) was just given an Emmy nomination and, frankly, it’s well-deserved.
Griffin’s whole “shtick” is about lampooning our celebrity-obsessed culture, even as she admits her own desire for celebrity. How timely is THAT? As an impovisational comedienne and entertainer, she is surprisingly brilliant. I say “surprisingly” because the lame Brooke Shield’s sitcom never really let her flap her wings. Her Bravo show is well-filmed, smart, tight, and always comes across as genuine.
While Griffin “picks on” celebs for their contrived nonsense, her show is bracingly NOT contrived. Reality programming is horrid, generally, but her show stands out. Again, the real key is that Griffin is indeed an improvisational comic genius and relevant in her “niche” wherein she pokes fun at celebs. The best aspect is that (if you pay attention) her comedy is never cynical or too snarky. She “loves” the celebs, yet she “loves” the fact that they deserve to be satirized in a culture that seems desperate to suck at the teat of “Princess Diana Syndrome”-afflicted Angelina Jolie.
Griffin is snappy, funny, and worth her weight in shamrocks, at least. The show is unique and worthy. Check it out.

No, based on your writing, I doubt that you would be afflicted by the brainwashing, and neither am I. I find the fan base interesting. Perhaps someone could study and explain this strange phenomenon.

If you don’t care about Kathy’s DIV then why waste your brain cells blogging about it.
I personally think she is too funny ....and no I haven’t visited any fan sites nor have I caught every episode of her D-list show. I just get her humor. Its pretty simple.
Were you saying Brangelina are the only types of news worthy things to blog about?
I say who cares just because you don’t “follow” her show or get her humor doesn’t mean reporters are not allowed to put out the latest story concerning her.
There are plenty of people famous for nothing out there and again I say who cares….. don’t knock their hustle..

Karina, If you read the entry carefully, I was only really writing abotu the divorce as a way intot he question of “why do we care?” As for the Brangelina thing, I was just wondering when Kathy had achieved the level of fame that would make us care about her divorce (a la Brad Pitt/Jennifer Aniston, etc.). I don’t dispute that some people are famous for nothing, but Kathy had seemed to me to be quite suddenly the kind of celebrity whose divorce we do care about. So I was wondering when that change happened, and if it was because you see so much of her personal life on her show.
