Paula’s Reaction to New American Idol Female

Paula and Kara

“It’s like, you know, having dinner with three people for seven tears, and getting quite bored of each other,” told reporters recently on the subject of new American Idol judge Kara DioGuardi, the first time the new foursome has appeared in front of the media together. “I think it’s gonna be interesting…And, she’s cute,” Cowell added.

said that Kara “will be speaking her mind,” on the show. “That’s a nice way of saying she’s bitchy,” Cowell interjected.

American Idol Adds Fourth Judge

Kara DioGuardiCould be fighting more than just Simon Cowell next year?

Just hours after reporting that changes would be coming, it’s been announced that American Idol will be add a fourth judge next year. Someone who will be there permanently.

For the singing competition’s eighth season, fans will be introduced to Kara DioGuardi, a highly-respected songwriter/producer. As it turns out, DioGuardi already has a history with the reality show having written tunes for former contestants. Kara - whose songs have appeared on more than 100 million records - was behind such tracks as “Walk Away” () and “Love Story” (Katharine McPhee). Her name is also attached to hits by a number of other musicians including Christina Aguilera ("Ain’t No Other Man"), Gwen Stefani ("Rich Girl"), Ashlee Simpson ("Pieces of Me") and Enrique Iglesias ("Escape").

Simon Cowell Talks About Boring Season 7

Simon CowellEarlier this week, made it known that changes - good or bad - will be a-coming.

The American Idol judge told reporters that given Nigel Lythgoe’s departure, he felt it was important to have more input for Season 8. As it was, Cowell felt a bit “bored” with last year’s contest - so this may be his only way of saving the show from sinking any further.

In an interview with reporters, Simon said that despite stories about overbearing stage dads and gay-stripping pasts, he thought Season 7 lacked the proper amount of controversy. By the time of the finale, he was left with no surprises.

“I felt I had known the contestants for years. And the other problem was that they were so media savvy, these contestants, that they never really showed us their true personalities - they were like robots. I didn’t know much more about them at the end than I did in the beginning. I think that it [’Idol’] could be more interesting and controversial than it was last year - you’re definitely going to see a change and I think it will be an improvement.”

But how exactly will he explain the pathetically low turnout in Puerto Rico? Can he make that look exciting? I guess we’ll just have to until next year to see what’s in store.

SanjayaWe all remember as a popular American Idol contestant (season six) with somewhat dubious vocals. Now, the former reality star will add a new line to his resume: TV spokesman.

Malakar is now part of the Nationwide Insurance “Life Comes at You Fast” campaign. The commercial pairs Malakar with a wise-man character who tells him he needs a haircut. With this new gig, Malakar will join Kevin Federline, Fabio and MC Hammer - all of whom have pushed the product in the past.

You can check out Sanjaya’s comedic work for yourself after the jump.

Is American Idol Nearing Its End?

Nigel LythgoeAlthough much was made of ’s ratings dip last season, it’s hard to criticize a show that produces numbers any program would kill for. On it’s worst day, Idol could still easily beat anything currently offered. But does that mean the series is still water cooler television?

Well, based on the recent turnout in Puerto Rico - maybe it isn’t. On August 2nd, the producers took the auditions over to the U.S. territory for the first time in eight seasons. Where best to find the next Marc Anthony, Jennifer Lopez or Ricky Martin? And while it’s still possible the next winner was discovered on that island, the judges only had a total of 300 to choose from. Yes, only 300 showed up to the San Juan auditions. (I doubt the crowd even filled one section of Coliseo de Puerto Rico.) If can somehow skirt around the pathetic sight during Season 8, he’ll have totally earned his paycheck for the year.

Paula Abdul Cancels Concert Again

Paula AbdulApparently four extra months of rehearsal time wasn’t simply enough.

Although she was given a second chance to participate in Today‘s Summer Concert Series, has just gone two-for-two. The American Idol judge has just canceled her live gig scheduled for August 29. This show-stopping move comes months after she was slated to perform on April 25.

Predictably, Abdul once again blames other commitments (this time for the FOX) as the reason for the decision. (As if the producers weren’t given plenty of notice about her morning show appearance.) Of course, an insider claims Paula’s busy calendar wasn’t really the issue. “Please. She can’t perform live. Her voice on the single is so mixed and electronicized you don’t know what she really sounds like any more,” said a source.

Wow. While I admittedly thought it was funny that Justin Guarini was doing free shows on Universal’s CityWalk, I must say he has now just earned a bit more of my respect. At least he has the guts to show up and face the public!

Hosting Quintet for 60th Annual Primetime Emmys

Tom BergeronIf you hated 2007’s Emmy Awards coverage, I have some good news and some bad news. The good news? The theater-in-the-round crap will be gone. (At least, I hope.) The bad news? Ryan Seacrest will once again be hosting. Though, in this case, he’ll be getting a little bit of help.

Instead of burdening one person with the ringleader task, the ceremony’s producers will be doling out the responsibility to five this time around. After all - who better to host a broadcast than the nominees for Outstanding Reality Host?

For the 60th Annual Primetime Emmys, those up for this year’s new category - (Dancing with the Stars), Heidi Klum (Project Runway), Howie Mandel (Deal or No Deal), Jeff Probst (Survivor) and Ryan Seacrest (American Idol) - will coincidentally be representing five different networks. Could this mean a much wider audience for ABC? They better hope so. Otherwise, one of them could be eliminated…

This fall’s telecast will be broadcast from Los Angeles on September 21.

Reality TV Awards Poll

Amazing Race 12

AOL recently polled over 1.3 million readers to find out what they love and hate most about reality television.

While most of the responses were entirely predictable (Best Villain: Simon Cowell), I must say there were a few winners I didn’t see coming. (Is host really worse than Julie Chen?)

Here are just some of the top vote-getters in this year’s poll:

Idol Divas Talk Tour

American IdolThe five females who managed to snag coveted Top 10 spots on the seventh season of recently talked with reporters about the aftermath of the show and the beginning of the summer tour.

The tour kicked off in Arizona, the first of 49 cities which will soon welcome the group of crooners. Diminutive feels positive about the tour, saying there will be “no one to say you sang horrible.”

“It’s not about what a judge is going to say. It’s about the music and the fans connecting and having a great time,” offered .

Carly Smithson also felt cheerful, saying “it’s amazing. Nobody is going to judge us after we sing.” Third-place finalist Syesha Mercado likened the tour to “a mini-concert for each person.”

“We sing three songs each,” Brooke White said of herself and her fellow females, “David Cook five, Archuleta will sing four. I think a lot of people had the impression it was going to be a bunch of group numbers, but it’s not. We actually are going out as individual performers and do our own set, our own music.”

Idols Hit the Road

Description

gives its contestants a grueling schedule during the weeks of shooting live performances, Ford video commercials and sessions with mentors. The show may be over - the hard work is not.

Even while the Idols sing a path across the U.S. (they’ll visit 49 cities in 72 days), some of the finalists will be pulling double duty and making records at the same time. Davids Cook and Archuleta, the season’s final two men standing, will both be working on tracks even as they woo audiences.

Thanks to a new deal with 19 Recordings and Arista Nashville, (who managed to astound judges and audiences with her unimagined longevity in the contest) will also be working on her debut album. The first single “15 Minutes of Shame,” is scheduled for an August 11 release. Cook was formerly signed to this same label years before, but never had the chance to record a single song.
