Jennifer Hudson’s Behind-the-Scenes Idol Appearance

Jennifer Hudson Jennifer Hudson will, at long last, return to the stage this week. The only trouble is, most of us won’t see it for a good, long while.

The Oscar-winning actress won’t be featured until after the live broadcast has ended. Hudson’s performance will be taped, not to be aired until some distant future episode FOX has yet to name. According to reports, ticket vouchers for this week’s results show promise “special performances by Jennifer Hudson and Ruben Studdard.” Studdard’s appearance has been confirmed by Idol.

Oscars up for Makeover?

Posted by Shannon Bennett Categories: Award Shows, Editorial, Gossip, Ratings,

DescriptionThe television audience this year hit an all-time low, and the Academy speculates that this is because the ceremony itself is beginning to feel outdated.  A makeover didn’t work for the Miss America Pageant, and there was a lot more to update on that wallflower.

Variety has served up the cringe-worthy suggestion of taking a cue from the Reality Phemonenon, but that (mercifully) doesn’t seem like a likelihood.  While it could be entertaining to see Streep and Dench race across a snow dune, tied to one another, carrying boiled produce in their mouths to win four points toward Best Actress, chances are it’s not going to catch on, even if statistics show that dignity is one of the damning things that makes poor Oscar seem so elderly.  And the truth may be that the program can’t catch up to the “YouTube generation,” because it’s a victim of it.

Jon Stewart Repeats as ‘Oscar’ Host

Jon StewartAfter cranking out a bloated and boring Oscars ceremony last February (Sorry, Ellen!)—the producers have gone back to square one.  ‘s , who helmed an extremely witty telecast two years ago, has been asked to host The 80th Annual Academy Awards.  This will be Stewart’s second time at bat.

Anyone who read our coverage of his stint knows how giddy I was about Jon Stewart’s performance.  All this time has passed, yet I can still remember him telling the audience ‘Good Night and Good Luck’ was how ended most of his dates.  (Okay—I actually read that in the previous post…but I swear it was etched in my brain).

It’s obviously too soon to say which movies will be nominated at this point—but I’m already imagining the movies Stewart could parody in his opener.  Maybe he could be deserted with Captain Jack Sparrow?  Or he could party with the boys of ?  Better yet—maybe he could do a musical number from ?

The ballots will be read Sunday, Feb. 24th on ABC.

The 2007 Academy Awards: Live Commentary

Academy Award Welcome to our live coverage of the 79th Annual Academy Awards!  During our live-blog of the 2006 Oscars, I made what may now be considered an eerie prediction about Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe:

“For some reason, I keep getting this nagging feeling that their relationship will dissolve sometime soon, but that discussion is for another post.”

I’d like to say that I’m psychic (if so, that Oscars pool at work is all mine)...but I’m going to have to chalk it up to nagging intuition.  What is that little voice inside me saying this year?  While some races may have been locked up months ago (I’m talking to you, Helen Mirren), there will be a shocker this year.  I can’t pinpoint the category, but I think it will be come riding in on a big yellow bus…

To find out who will be going hog-wild tonight during the Year of the Pig, stay tuned here for the live results!

The 2006 Academy Awards: Live Commentary

Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Award Shows, ABC, Talent, Features,

Academy AwardHere’s the night that many people around the world have been waiting for.  The rare opportunity for us to see all our beloved movie stars at the same place and time.  As for me—while I can’t wait to watch the red carpet affair, I have a love/hate relationship with the annual event.  The bad news?  When I notice that I’m watching beautiful people parade by while I’m sitting in my PJ’s gorging on chicken wings, I feel lower than low.  But when I realize that I now have the opportunity (and the vindictive excuse) for me to sit back and be catty to my heart’s content—the good then outweighs the bad.

As for how I actually feel about the awards portion of the event, I think that this could be a potentially exciting year—especially if my personal fave, Crash, sweeps in and takes away the grand prize from Brokeback MountainThat whole gay cowboy thing was so two months ago… we have all moved on now.  But even if Brokeback does come away with the win, it’s still a victory for us all.  Who would have ever thought five years ago that a gay-themed movie could become Best Picture?

Well, we’re now less than an hour away from the big event.  Please keep checking back with us here at TV Envy as we’ll keep you updated with play-by-play commentary of the big night! You can view it all after the jump - and feel free to play along in the comments.
