NBC Lays Out New January Schedule

Kyle Chandler in Friday Night Lights

Come this January, NBC will be setting aside some dead weight to make room for a few new entries. The network will also also welcome the return of a critical fave.

  • As mentioned earlier, My Own Worst Enemy and Lipstick Jungle have both been cut from the schedule. Crusoe, which was recently moved to Saturdays, is also MIA.
  • Life, Chuck and Heroes will all get a few weeks off. (The trio will be back in time for February sweeps.)
  • Although it was recently banished to DirecTV, will live to see another NBC Friday. The drama will return on Jan. 16.
  • Hoping to jump in late on the dance show craze, the network will introduce a new reality series from the producers of American Idol and So You Think You Can Dance. Superstars of Dance, a show which is being described as the “Olympic Games of dance,” will begin airing on Mondays starting January 5th.
  • Deal or No Deal will take a hiatus while another Howie Mandel-related series gets its start. Howie Do It - a hidden-camera reality program - will premiere on Friday January 9th.
  • Momma’s Boys, another Ryan Seacrest produced show (can we say Keeping Up with the Kardashians?), will get a home on Mondays right after Superstars.

Friday Ratings: Lipstick Jungle Not Seeing Improvement

If there ever was a time for fans to support Lipstick Jungle, it’s now. Unfortunately, the show facing cancellation just took another another step backward, not forward. Last night, the show placed third in its hour and dropped 21% from last week. But then again, if Knight Rider can get a full season pickup - who knows?

Friday Ratings: A New High for Ghost Whisperer

Despite lower numbers for the 9:00 hour (no NCIS repeat this this time), CBS was still on top last Friday. A large part of the network’s success was due to Ghost Whisperer. The series hit a season high with the viewers last week.

Friday Ratings: CBS Owns the Evening

At this point, I’m not sure if there is anything CBS could do wrong on Friday nights. Even when things were down (a.k.a. The Ex List days), the network was still on top. Now a repeat is surpassing the Eye’s originals.

This Week on TV (11/10-11/16)

Anthony Edwards and Angela Bassett in ER

(You can view TV Envy’s Fall Television Programming Schedule here.)

MONDAY (11/10)
  • Chuck (NBC, 8pm):  “Chuck chances upon his ex-flame (Jordana Brewster) and embellishes his status in life to impress her.” We’re talking about a girl who starred in D.E.B.S.. He shouldn’t try too hard.
  • Prison Break (FOX, 9pm):  “Gretchen gives Michael the rest of the bird book, but he suffers another seizure after deciphering it.” That pretty much sums up my feelings about bird books as well.
  • Samantha Who? (ABC, 9:30):  “Sam is sentenced to community service, where she meets a troubled young woman () and decides to help turn her life around.” Sam has now become the better-looking version of Earl Hickey.
  • 17 Kids and Counting (TLC, 10pm):  “Jinger takes her driving test; the family celebrates Michelle’s birthday and responds to viewer questions.” Uhh, I have a question. Jinger? Seriously?

Friday Ratings: CBS Better Off without Ex List

Although most shows saw lower numbers on Halloween night, CBS didn’t spook viewers away. In fact, the network - which dumped The Ex List last week - did even better thanks to a repeat of NCIS. Meanwhile, Lipstick Jungle‘s performance on NBC Friday looked downright scary. The program was down 35% from its last Wednesday outing.

Friday Ratings: Ghost Whisperer, Numb3rs Hit Season Highs

Despite being sandwiched in between Friday night’s best shows, CBS’ The Ex List continues to slide in the ratings. Nevertheless, the network still manages to dominate the week-end numbers.

MONDAY (10/20)
  • Prison Break (FOX, 9pm):  “Roland seethes at the treatment he has gotten from the gang since he lost the transcribing device in Las Vegas.” Thanks to his fine work, this show has just been dragged out longer than it needed to be.
  • Gossip Girl (CW, 9pm):  “Vanessa blackmails Blair, so Blair retaliates by asking Chuck to seduce Vanessa.” Sounds like somebody’s got some cruel intentions...
  • 17 Kids and Counting (TLC, 10pm):  “A look at how the thrifty Duggars save money on their clothing, food and heating bills.” Thankfully, I don’t plan on shopping for a family of 17, so there’s a lot more for me.
  • CSI: Miami (CBS, 10pm):  “A murder occurs in a trendy fashion boutique and during the investigation Horatio realizes that Julia is becoming increasingly unstable and volatile.” Had he taken his glasses off, he could have seen this coming sooner.

Crusoe

(You can view TV Envy’s Fall Television Programming Schedule here.)

MONDAY (10/13)
  • Chuck (NBC, 8pm):  “Sarah’s ex-flame and partner, Bryce Larkin, makes an unforeseen return and goes undercover with Sarah as an overly affectionate couple.” Unforeseen return? I predicted he would come back last year!
  • Little People, Big World (TLC, 9pm):  Season 5 premiere. “Matt travels to Baghdad to help dwarf children in need of medical attention.” By doing so, he has now milked new meaning out of the show’s title.
  • Samantha Who? (ABC, 9:30pm):  Season 2 premiere. “Sam teams with her mom in a dance competition against Regina’s nemesis (Cybill Shepherd) and her partner, who just happens to be a ringer.” Why do I always find myself rooting against Cybill Shepherd?
  • My Own Worst Enemy (NBC, 10pm):  Series premiere. “The implant in Henry Spivey’s brain that separates the two identities begins to malfunction, leaving each side fighting for dominance.” On one side, we have the who excelled in Heathers. On the other side, we have the Slater who stunk in Mobsters.
