Lance Bass Joins Ex-Boy Band Members for Reality TV Contest

Lance Bass and Joey FatoneLance Bass is wrangling up former NSYNC member Joey Fatone in addition to A.J. Mclean of Backstreet Boys, Joey McIntyre of New Kids on the Block, and possibly Bobby Brown of New Edition for a reality television competition.

The VH1 contest is expected to rival NBC's The Voice, with the boy band alumni choosing which singers would comprise the perfect boy band.

Bobby Brown isn't confirmed just yet, but Lance says that he "thinks Bobby will do it. I think he'd love it."

Will you tune in to watch Lance and company attempt to resurrect the boy band?

This Week on TV (6/23-6/29)

Celebrity Family Feud

(You can view TV Envy’s Summer Television Programming Schedule here.)

MONDAY (6/23)
  • I Love the New Millennium (VH1, 10pm):  “Eight-part series featuring stars reminiscing about pop culture phenomena of the new millennium begins with the year 2000.” Is it too soon to wonder what VH1 will cover in 2011?
  • Legally Blonde the Musical: The Search for Elle Woods (MTV,10pm):  “The ladies perform with a canine costar: Bruiser, the dog from the musical.” I had no idea revived Punk’d.
  • Psychic Kids: Children of the Paranormal (A&E, 10pm):  “A 14-year-old boy, who claims to see spirits of people and animals, is introduced to siblings close to his age who supposedly have paranormal gifts.” I’m always happy when freaky kids find someone to play with.
  • Weeds (Showtime, 10pm):  “Celia’s hard time in county lock-up gets harder when her cellmate decides to make Celia her ‘special girl’.” Yeah - that would definitely suck.

Joey Fatone Takes on the Red Carpet

Joey FatoneTake that, Justin Timberlake! Well, sort of… Joey Fatone, former boy-bander from NSync, has just been tapped to host the red carpet events for TV Guide Network with former Dancing with the Stars Alum, Lisa Rinna. Fatone has made a major comeback since his appearance on Dancing with the Stars, most recently taking on hosting duties for The Singing Bee. While he hasn’t exactly been standing on the unemployment line since he left his boy band days behind—he was seen in the musical Rent, for one thing—his sudden emergence back into the mainstream is a big deal. He starts his red carpet coverage at the Emmys on September 16th and will continue his red carpet reporting through 2008. Of course, this means Rinna and Fatone take over for Joan and Melissa Rivers—and quite honestly, I don’t care who replaces the Rivers, but I’m so glad to see them gone! Fatone remarked, “I am looking forward to making the Red Carpet experience entertaining, spontaneous, and most of all fun—not only for those walking the Red Carpet, but also for the fans watching at home.”

Singing Bee is a Hit

Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Games, Prime Time, NBC, Ratings,

NBC Logo Call me crazy, but I don’t know what all the “buzz” about The Singing Bee is. Get it? Buzz? Lame, right? Well, almost as lame as my joke, is the actual show, which I caught about half of last night. It’s mediocre at best and not even happy-go-lucky N’ Sync-er Joey Fatone can inject excitement into it. Still, I suppose it beats that Bingo show that was on awhile ago. So lame was that, the name completely escapes me. The Singing Bee, on NBC, is a game show that combines karaoke and Name That Tune as contestants compete for the grand money prize. The first episode drew 13 million people, so I guess it’s not all bad. Then again, with the summer slim pickins, what else is there to watch? Oh, and the dancing Honey Bees may be an extra draw, but I’m not seein’ it. Over on Fox, the similarly themed game show Don’t Forget the Lyrics (hosted by Wayne Brady) didn’t fare quite so well in ratings, earning 8.4 million viewers. Will either of these shows have any longevity beyond the summer months? And will I cave like a deck of cards and start watching Singing Bee because there’s nothing better to watch? Given my glimpse at it last night, not likely… although those uber-peppy contestants are a hoot to watch.

Dancing With the Stars Kicks Off Tonight

Cheryl Burke Don’t forget—the fourth season of Dancing With the Stars begins tonight. Place your bets… who’s going to go the distance, and will dancer Cheryl Burke add a third trophy to her case? Burke won the last two competitions with partners Drew Lachey and Emmitt Smith, but doesn’t feel the pressure to win this time. Burke told People magazine, “It’s about who I’m dancing with and making my partner the best dancer he can possibly be.” Or maybe it’s because the trophy is a hunk of junk. She also told the magazine, “Both [trophies] are falling to pieces, by the way. The mirrors are slowly falling off.” Check out the competition tonight, when she and partner Ian Ziering take to the dance floor. Filling out the cast are Heather Mills, Billy Ray Cyrus, Joey Fatone, Apolo Anton Ohno, Laila Ali, Clyde Drexler, John Ratzenberger, Shandi Finnessey, Leeza Gibbons and Paulina Porizkova.

John Ratzenberger to Fill in on ‘Dancing’

Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Prime Time, Reality, ABC, Rumors,

John RatzenbergerVincent Pastore bailed on Dancing With the Stars after he realized that it would require physical activity. Luckily, Dancing was able to fill the void left by Pastore by recruiting John Ratzenberger, famous for his role of Cliff Claven on Cheers, as well as a multitude of Pixar film voice work. Pastore left after just one week of rehearsals when he discovered that it was a bit more than what he signed on for. Ratzenberger, 59, was asked to appear on the dance competition before, but had to turn it down due to a scheduling conflict. It’s good that he was free this go-around, and able to slip in quickly at the last minute. Tune in on March 19 to see how Ratzenberger and fellow Dancing contestants Joey Fatone, Billy Ray Cyrus, Heather Mills, and others make out in the big dance-off.
