Wednesday Ratings: Country Experiencing Obama Fatigue

Looks like President Obama wasn’t what viewers had in mind for sweeps. Last night’s umpteenth press conference was seen by 29% less people than the March 24th version. Although FOX was able to beat the other networks for its airing of Lie to Me, the strategic move was probably a moot point. American Idol would have given the network a win anyway.

  • (7.9 million, 2.4/7 in 18-49) did the same as last week.
  • NBC’s coverage of the presser (1.6/5) drew in 6.7 million.
  • ABC’s political hour (1.6/5) attracted 6.1 million.
  • Approximately 6 million watched the president on CBS (1.5/5).
  • (4 million, 1.8/6) remained steady.

What are President Obama’s Favorite Shows?

EntourageCould President Obama’s secret love of HBO have anything to do with the channel’s inaugural coverage?

Thanks to his highly-publicized selections before the NCAA tournament, the country already knows that our POTUS likes to watch a little basketball. But what other programs does he like to follow when he has some free time?

Although he referenced Simon Cowell during his recent appearance on Jay Leno, American Idol apparently doesn’t rank at the top of Obama’s must watch list. According to Politico, the President has a preference for two shows coincidentally on the same pay channel.

“We would talk about all the time,” White House press secretary Robert Gibbs revealed. “I remember one time I e-mailed him because [a] call was scheduled for the last 15 minutes of Entourage and I said, ‘Just be late and we can just watch Entourage and still get on and do the call,’” Gibbs added. (On a side note: Jeremy Piven’s character is based on Ari Emanuel, the Chief of Staff’s real-life brother.)

Tuesday Ratings: Reaper Reaps the Benefits

Yesterday’s Obama presser may have been a nuisance for some networks, but it worked out well for one. Those not interested in another news conference brought Reaper to season-high numbers. Meanwhile, the back half of the evening was owned by CBS.

  • ABC saw 8.7 million (2.0/6) tune in for their coverage.
  • NBC (2.2/6) chalked up 8.3 million for their broadcast.
  • FOX (1.6/5) pulled in 4.3 million for its newser.
  • (2.7 million, 1.1/3) rose by 800,000.

American Idol: Simon Cowell and Barack Obama…So Happy Together?

Simon Cowell recently let the beans spill during a routine radio interview: the minds behind hope to receive a visit from President Barack Obama in the near future.

“We’re trying,” Cowell admitted that the show would like to book an appearance from the Head Honcho himself. The acerbic judge also noticed that Obama mentioned his name during the much talked-about appearance on The Tonight Show. Cowell related the moment, saying that “was on the Tonight Show, talking about how everyone in Washington is a critic.” Indeed, it was one of the funnier moments of the interview. “And then he said: ‘unfortunately, they’re all like Simon Cowell.’ I’m not sure if that’s a compliment or not.”

I’m not, either, but there’s no question about whether or not wants to compliment the country’s Commander-in-Chief. The famously hard-to-please judge thinks Obama is “a really cool guy.”

Cool enough to appear on reality TV? We’ll have to wait and see.

Obama Scheduled for Leno, Third Press Conference

President Barack ObamaIn the next week, will be addressing the television public on two different stages.

This Thursday night, Obama will hitting up during a trip to Los Angeles. Although it’s not unusual to see presidential candidates on late-night fare, his visit will mark the first time a sitting POTUS has made such an appearance.

The chat with Jay Leno will be followed up by a more formal affair next Tuesday (Feb. 24). That is when President Obama is scheduled to hold another primetime event. There’s been no word yet as to how this hour-long presser (starting at 8:00 PM EST) will affect the schedules for or Dancing with the Stars.

  • The Secret Life of the American Teenager (ABC Family, 8pm):  “Ricky’s dad arrives in town with a proposal for how Ricky should handle impending fatherhood.” Apparently leaving town is an option?
  • House (FOX, 8pm):  “Cuddy discovers that caring for her newly adopted baby leaves her little time to run the hospital.” Taking care of House and a baby is an impossible feat.
  • Bromance (MTV, 9pm):  “The guys embark on a camping trip, but before reaching their destination, they stop at a biker bar where each must face off against a huge biker in the parking lot.” The reality is, many people want to kick ‘s ass. It’s time to hone their defense skills now.
  • Paranormal State (A&E, 10pm):  Season premiere. “A family believes their new home in suburban New Jersey is haunted. The team’s investigation leads them to dig in the yard for possible answers.” Haunting or no haunting, buried things in my yard is reason enough to move.

HBO Offers Free Access to Obama’s Opening Ceremony

Although most of us are currently without tickets for ‘s big day, those with cable or satellite service will have front row seats to the first major event of Inauguration Week.

On January 18, HBO will exclusively air the festivities from the Lincoln Memorial. The program is expected to be filled with A-list performers including a rumored appearance from Bruce Springsteen. Unlike the channel’s coverage back in 1993 (when Bill Clinton was welcomed into office), the 90-minute event will also be open to non-subscribers.

On Monday the 19th, the Disney Channel will be the sole broadcaster of “Kids’ Inaugural: We Are the Future.” The event honoring military families will be attended by and Jill Biden. Then on Tuesday the 20th, ABC will have exclusive access to “The Neighborhood Ball: An Inauguration Celebration.” That is where the Obamas are expected to perform their first dance of the evening.

Tuesday Ratings: Noteworthy Numbers for Historic Evening

Although CW decided to broadcast new episodes of 90210 and Privileged last night, we’re going to ignore that network for just this week.

While it would be hard for anyone to deny the significance of last night’s , how many people were actually tuned in? Here’s some of the highlights from yesterday’s political coverage:

  • Approximately 71.5 million watched the events unfold over 14 different networks. That’s a 16% increase from 2000’s contest between and Al Gore (61.6 million) and a 21% increase over 2004’s battle between Bush and Kerry (59.2 million).
  • Of the 71.5 million, 38.13 million saw Barack Obama become the President-elect via the four major networks.
  • ‘s 13.1 million viewers bested the competition Monday. (That was the Alphabet network’s first win since 1996.) had been holding the title since the 2000 election.
  • ‘s 12.3 million actually beat CBS and NBC for 2nd place. That was the cable channel’s largest audience in its 28-year-history. That number almost doubled what the network saw in 2004.

Wednesday Ratings: Daisies Gets a Little Push from Obama

Although Barack Obama was the most watched person over the five major networks (a combined 26.3 million watched him on CBS, FOX and NBC), Game 5 of the World Series was the most-watched event on one network last night. And while it still lagged behind the political infomercial, Pushing Daisies did get a nice bump from bored voters.
