American Idol 10: Top 9 Perform

American Idol gave viewers an energetic opening to Wednesday’s performance night. Gwen Stefani worked on the show for the week, dressing all the female contenders in her clothing line in a bit of cross-promotion courtesy of FOX. The week’s theme was dedicated to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio. Idol’s new judge Steven Tyler is a recent inductee into the Hall.

Black Eyed Pea will.i.am helped coach contestant, some of whom were bound to have big trouble with a rock n roll theme.

American Idol 10, Top 11

No one was sent home the week before, as the judges chose to use their save for Casey Abrams, so two singers had to leave American Idol on Thursday night. The show gave us a dramatic intro to lead up to the episode, which was peppered with video montages, performances and recaps from the preceding night.

Voters set a new record for the show, offering up 55 million votes to keep their favorites in the contest. But who managed to win too few hearts and wind up with theirs broken?

American Idol 10: Top 11 Perform… Again

American Idol 10 - Steven Tyler, Jennifer Lopez, Randy Jackson

The second Top 11 performance on American Idol began with an appropriate recap of last week’s shocking elimination, which culminated in the most dramatic judges’ save in show history. The save is now gone, and all 11 performers have been cut loose to stand on their own… if they can.

Ryan Seacrest spent some time speaking about last week’s “incredible moment” before introducing the singers for the evening and theme for the night. Elton John was the man of the evening, a rock icon who has rubbed elbows with royalty and inspired the likes of Lady Gaga, Madonna and others.

American Idol began Thursday’s results show with an explanation of the Motown genre… though we use the word “explanation” rather loosely. More than 30 million votes were counted to bring the night’s results, which Ryan Seacrest hyped “may shock you.” For once, his words proved true. The male competitors wore black suits for results night, while the girls put on shimmering white evening wear.

As always, Idol peppered its results show with videos of behind-the-scenes action.

American Idol 10: Top 12 Results

The Top 12 results show of American Idol began with a montage of all the Idols sharing their first childhood dream jobs -- only two of which were “singer” (Thia Megia and Pia Toscano). Results shows always begin on a dramatic note. It’s the only way the show can convince people to watch an hour-long broadcast of what could just as easily take two minutes to learn right before the next performance round.

Jennifer Lopez wore white, Steven Tyler black. And no one’s looking at (or listening to) Randy Jackson anymore. But the results show is Ryan Seacrest’s rare time to shine; it’s always his to lead. To open the show, he showed off baby pictures of the night’s performers, Lee DeWyze and the Black Eyed Peas, since the Top 12 all had their pictures shown off during the preceding performance round.

American Idol 10: Top 13 Results

American Idol gave itself a big opening for the Wednesday results show to get the crowd good and hyped for the intense hour that would follow. Approximately 30 million votes were recorded for the Top 13 singers… but, it may mean nothing. The judges’ save, offered in recent seasons, is active once again. At any time, the panel may save one eliminated contestant and keep them in the contest.

On the fashion front, Steven Tyler wore a long trench coat, J-Lo an asymmetrical blouse that was literally frightening and Ryan Seacredst his standard black suit.

Casey Abrams was not present for the live show; he has been hospitalized once again. Again, Abrams was rushed in for treatment after he complained of severe stomach pains. We’ll keep you updated on his story through VIP Breakdown.

After a lengthy introduction in which the American Idol judges, host and Top 13 contestants were paraded around on the stage, Tuesday’s performance episode started.

The theme was “Your Personal Idol,” and each chose songs from an artist who means something to them.

American Idol 10: Top 24 Results

The first results show of American Idol 10 began with an emotional montage of the Top 24 contestants through their various audition rounds, which seemed completely unending this season. They each performed only once on the big Idol stage (and not even live), getting just one shot to make their dreams come true.

For half of them, those dreams would die before the episode was over. How we love elimination rounds.

The second half of American Idol’s Top 24 stood up on the new stage Wednesday night. The new panel got another big introduction before they walked to their seats, and the in-house audience was giddy with excitement.

We’ve no idea why. Largely, Idol’s Top 12 Men were unimpressive (with, at best, three exceptions) on the big stage -- and they weren’t even live. All performances were taped last week, though the Thursday results will go out live in traditional Idol fashion.

Randy Jackson reminded viewing audiences that by the end of Thursday, the show will be left with a Top 10. That’s right -- a whopping 14 of them are going to be broken-hearted in less than 24 hours. “Ya gotta take it the moon today, and that’s where we’re going,” Steven Tyler told the night's performers.

American Idol 10 - Steven Tyler

American Idol opened its Tuesday episode with a new stage -- and, some shocking news. This is... not the American Idol we’ve grown used to. After the performances from the Top 24 this week, a staggering 10 contestants will be cut.

This is what happens when you invite too many people to Hollywood and drag out the audition rounds.

Clint Jun Gamboa was the first to take the stage (and therefore, the easiest to forget). He’s still wearing his glasses, a true mistake, and sang “Superstitious,” which was another mistake. The performance started out weak, and though Clint tried to sell it with plenty of dance moves and attitude, the band completely drowned out his little vocals.
