David Letterman and Sarah Palin

The Sarah Palin/David Letterman controversy has just entered its next and, hopefully, final phase.

On tonight’s Late Show with David Letterman, the host does what many had felt he should have done last week—apologize sincerely to the Alaskan governor. The move comes after increased criticism about his questionable jokes and a scathing response from Palin herself. (The network also lost an advertiser from its website.)

Although a video clip will most likely be made available later, you can read CBS’ transcript of Letterman’s remarks after the jump.

Eight months ago, who knew David Letterman would see himself in this position? Back in October, John McCain did his best to make amends after famously snubbing the host for the economic crisis. Now it’s David who’s trying to keep the peace…with Sarah Palin.

On Tuesday’s broadcast, Letterman cracked more than a few jokes abut the Alaskan governor’s visit to New York. In addition to comparing Palin’s look to a “slutty fight attendant” (you can see his Top 10 after the jump), he also made references to one of Sarah’s children. Which daughter he was commenting about is part of the issue at hand.

Incredible spellers or not, the competitors of this year’s National Spelling Bee couldn’t topple the showdown between Sex and Leonid on SYTYCD. The reality program helped FOX win another battle in the demos while CBS was on top with the viewers.

If you’re secretly hoping Wipeout would up the drama and add wasteful food stunts, then may be the better option for you.

In just over a month, CBS - and a pregnant Julie Chen - will kick off the 11th installment (has there really been that many already?) of the program. As usual, the series will air thrice-weekly episodes. No word at this time what big twist the reality show will have up its sleeve this time around. Are half the contestants secretly transsexuals? Will bosses and fired employees find themselves competing against each other? Is one really a terminator?

Big Brother 11 premieres Thursday, July 9th at @ 8:00. The show will then air on Sundays @ 8:00 and Tuesdays @ 9:00.

Thank goodness for Wipeout. The Season 2 premiere of summer’s guilty pleasure saved ABC from a completely dismal evening. Even though the reality competition bested SYTYCD in the 8:00 demos, FOX was still the overall winner with the 18-49s. Meanwhile, CBS was first place with the viewers.
