Disney Plans Camp Rock Sequel
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Kids, Music, Prime Time, Cable, Ratings

Although the movie didn’t pull in High School Musical 2-sized numbers, Camp Rock did well enough on Friday night to warrant interest in a sequel.
The Disney Channel original, which featured the red-hot Jonas Brothers, debuted to 8.9 million viewers making it the highest-rated non-sequel to air on that network. (HSM2 had 17.2 million glued to their sets last August.) Rock also outperformed anything from the Top 5 networks on that same night.
Assuming a script is finalized soon (and schedules are coordinated), the key players could get back to work on the sequel’s production sometime next year.

(You can view TV Envy’s Summer Television Programming Schedule here.)
MONDAY (6/16)
- The Bachelorette: DeAnna Tells All (ABC, 8pm): “With six bachelors remaining, DeAnna Pappas assesses the competition to win her heart so far, as do her six beaus.” Apparently revealing their boxers just hasn’t told her enough.
- Weeds (Showtime, 10pm): Season premiere. “Nancy, Andy and the boys, on the run after she set fire to their house, head to the beach and a ‘heartwarming family reunion’ with Judah’s grandmother.” Had I known this show was only 30-minutes long, I could have caught up a long time ago!
- The Mole (ABC, 10pm): “The contestants, clad in nothing but their underwear, hit the streets of Santiago, Chile and solicit clothing.” At this point, the show could probably use a little skin to ramp interest up a bit.
- Secret Diary of a Call Girl (Showtime, 10:30pm): Series premiere. “A high-priced London escort entertains a middle-aged client who enjoys role-playing and has a penchant for being down on the farm.” I think that summary says it all.

Can Disney Rock the Ratings Again?
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Kids, Music, Prime Time, Cable, Gossip

Lightning doesn’t strike twice…unless you build the right kind of rod. No one anticipated the runaway success of Disney’s High School Musical, and now the powers-that-be are determined not to be caught unawares a second time. Fanfare and fan participation became the bookends of the High School Musical 2 marketing campaign…and even this pales in comparison to the star treatment the network is giving the soon-to-be-released Camp Rock.
The promos have been going strong for weeks, the Web site is filled with glitter and pizazz, and the debut is scheduled for June 20. Are you itching to set your DVR?
With the Jonas Brothers co-starring and a crop of fresh-faced youngsters, Disney is treating Rock like it’s the heir apparent to the Musical throne (the stars of which are moving quickly past the high school stage of their lives). But…is it?

More Music from Disney
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Kids, Music, Cable, Rumors
Still looking for ways to extract more success from the mega-hits High School Musical and High School Musical 2, the Disney channel has begun production on a new musical movie in Toronto. Camp Rock will debut in summer 2008 and stars Disney channel alums the Jonas Brothers - Joe, Kevin, and Nick. Camp Rock will tell the tale of Mitchie Lopez, a teen who wants to spend her summer at a camp for musicians. The trouble is, the Lopez family can’t afford the expense, so Mitchie takes a kitchen job to be near the tuneful summer camp. Shane Gray (Joe Jonas) overhears Mitchie singing and embarks on a quest to find the face behind the voice. Could Camp Rock be the next big musical hit for the Disney channel, or will lightning fail to strike twice?
